While officially retired, James remains an affiliated minister with the Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena, and a member of the teaching circle at the Empty Moon Zen Network.

He preaches at UU churches in Southern California, and participates in and occasionally co-leads Zen retreats.

Today James mainly supports his spouse Jan as live in caregivers for Jan's 98 year old mother.

Beyond that and working with a few old students and friends on koans, he is mostly focused on writing. 

His time available for projects beyond these is limited.
